The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) is the only true specialty society
in Emergency Medicine today. As an organization,
it believes achievement of board certification represents the only acceptable method of
attaining recognition as a specialist in Emergency Medicine.
Unfortunately, there now exists within the field
a relentless assault on the value of board certification. Some Emergency
Medicine organizations have suggested other forms
of licensing as a replacement for an ABEM or AOBEM certification. Others have remained silent on
this important issue out of fear of litigation or membership loss.
AAEM alone has taken a strong stand against
these assaults. Dedicated to challenging any attempt
to lower the standards for specialization in Emergency Medicine, AAEM believes it is in the
best interest of the public to discourage current
entry into the practice of Emergency Medicine by pathways other than residency training followed
by board certification.
