Founded in 1979, the American Board of
Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is one of the 24 certifying
boards of the American Board of Medical
Specialties (ABMS). The ABEM is an independent,
non-profit organization whose certificate states that
a physician has successfully completed a rigorous program of graduate medical education
and training, and then passed an examination
designed to assess his or her knowledge, skills,
and experience.
The Board of Directors of the ABEM consists
of distinguished Emergency Medicine physicians in education, research, and clinical practice.
The ABEM strives to improve training, establishes
the requirements for certification, and creates and
sets the standards for its examinations.
The American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine
(AOBEM) was founded in 1980. It is one
of 18 boards of the Bureau of Osteopathic
Specialists and maintains jurisdiction over the
examination leading to certification in Osteopathic
Emergency Medicine.
