Emergency Medicine Workforce Committee

Letter from the Chairs

The APP Task Force has been working on issues that surround emergency medicine and affect emergency physicians. This task force produced the updated AAEM position statement on Advanced Practice Providers and published two related articles; one in Common Sense and one in EMNews.

The Workforce Task Force produced the AAEM position statement on Emergency Medicine Workforce after researching the continued growth of EM residency programs over the last decade in addition to APP programs. Dr. Reiter’s original 2016 article on the data on physician workforce and the EM workforce, including the impact of physician extenders and scribes on the practice of EM has been updated and submitted for publication.

We recognize that these issues are very pivotal to emergency medicine and will be a part of our landscape for the unforeseen future, thus deserving of our attention at the committee level. We will continue the important work started by the respective task forces and anticipate that their synergy as a committee will be very productive.

The broad objectives for this new committee will be to evaluate the impact of APPs in emergency medicine, and to evaluate the impact of the growth of EM residency programs and APP programs on the emergency medicine workforce.
