Support the Successful Implementation of Congress's Surprise Billing Ban
After a multi-year bipartisan, bicameral effort, Congress passed the landmark No Surprises Act to end surprise medical bills for American patients. Please join us in writing to the departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Treasury, and Labor (DOL) to ask that this legislation – one of the most important patient protection bills in American history – be correctly implemented.
The American Medical Association letter on EFTs
The American Medical Association continues to hear that physicians have challenges when attempting to access fee-free reimbursement for claims via EFT. We are writing to the Biden Administration asking for a fresh evaluation of the issue, specifically calling on the administration to (1) issue guidance that affirms physicians’ right to choose and receive basic EFT payments without paying for additional services and (2) undertake the associated enforcement activities.
The designation of September 17, 2021, as National Physician Suicide Awareness Day
AAEM supports formally recognizing September 17, 2021 as ‘‘National Physician Suicide Awareness Day’’ to raise awareness, reduce the stigma of mental health issues, and promote a national discussion about physician suicide.
H.R. 6910, Emergency Room Hero and Patient Safety Act
There is bipartisan federal legislation that was introduced in the 116th Congress (H.R. 6910, The ER Hero and Patient Safety Act) that ensures that due process rights are protected for all emergency physicians. This bill, which is supported by the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) and all prominent stakeholders in the specialty, will ensure that equal due process protections exist for emergency physicians regardless of who employs these doctors.

H.R. 1667/S. 610, Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act
The Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act is bipartisan legislation introduced by Senators Kaine, Young and over 20 bipartisan Senate co-sponsors, and by Reps. Wild and McKinley in the House. This legislation will provide much needed support for our frontline healthcare workers, by focusing on mental and behavioral health concerns that impact many attending and resident physicians in the specialty of emergency medicine.
