History of CAL/AAEM and WestJEM
Western Journal of Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health
The union between the California Chapter Division of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (CAL/AAEM) and the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine (WestJEM), then known as the California Journal of Emergency Medicine (CalJEM), was initiated in July 2000 by then-CAL/AAEM president Dr. Antoine Kazzi and CalJEM editor Dr. Robert Derlet.
CalJEM began as a 4-8 page newsletter distributed quarterly to 200 CAL/AAEM members. Over the years CalJEM expanded in content and scope into a print journal distributed to over 2,500 individuals in California under the auspices of its second editor Dr. Robert Rodriguez. CalJEM continued to have staunch support from CAL/AAEM members and the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. August 2007 marked a major transition in which CalJEM was transformed and WestJEM was born under the leadership of its editor Dr. Mark Langdorf.
The metamorphosis was ambitious with the goal of expanding the journal’s scope and content beyond emergency physicians in California to become the premier open-access emergency medicine journal in the Western Hemisphere.
Since its inception, WestJEM and its partnerships have grown immensely. WestJEM has been sponsored by California ACEP since 2009, the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians since 2010, with an ever-expanding base of state chapter and department sponsorships, and international society partnerships. WestJEM now receives submissions from throughout the world. WestJEM is indexed in the National Library of Medicine’s MEDLINE database, PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, CINAHL, the Directory of Open Access Journals, Medscape, and Google Scholar.
